Renovating my Bed and Breakfast house in sunny Faro, Algarve, Portugal; August 2013
Casa aOrta is a 65-75 years old house, with the typical structure and materials of Algarvian houses that was recently renovated in order to combine some traditional characteristics with a clean and functional environment.
We are looking forward to accommodate people that like authentic experiences as tourists. Lília (the host) likes to cook (and will be happy to cook Portuguese/Algarvian food with you), drink wine, take pictures, play charades, show what she considers the best of Algarve and share pretty much everything that she knows about Portuguese history and culture.
The name aOrta came from a word play (that only makes sense in Portuguese) with the words aorta (the main artery in our body that distributes blood from the heart to all the other organs) and the words “a horta” (which mean “the vegetable garden”). The reason for this word play has two components:
Why Casa aOrta? – reason one
One more physical, obvious, palpable: because there’s a big connection between the Bed & Breakfast in Faro and my grandparents’ old vegetable garden and orchard. In my fridge you can find fruit from their garden and some vegetables too – that you can cook with or just treat yourself with for breakfast. You’re also always welcome to come to the garden with me and eat the fruit right after getting it from the tree or just help me crack some almonds, in case you find that as relaxing as I do. Different seasons will offer different fruits/activities;
Why Casa aOrta? – reason two
another more conceptual: Faro is around the middle point of Algarve, where you can get easily to different points of the region and up to Lisbon or east to Seville. It is part of my pleasure as a host to help my guests find what in this region makes their heart rejoice – food and wine may be one big attraction, the cultural habits, beautiful landscapes and bird watching combined with some trekking, enjoying beaches with few people (except maybe for July and August) or just relaxing while drinking a cup of espresso;
